My name is Alysha Rocher and I am currently a student in the Bachelor of Education program at UNBC. My intention is to become an elementary school teacher once I graduate, but I look forward to seeing how this intention may grow and evolve through my studies and my practicums.
My journey to this point has been full of travels, adventures, and self-discovery. Growing up I always knew I wanted to be a teacher because I felt a connection to children and I was always eager to support and teach my peers whenever the opportunity arose.
I completed my Bachelor of Science at UBC with the intention to become a teacher afterwards, but along the way I moved to Whistler and fell in love with the mountains, the life I was building there, and the person I was becoming. I naturally took at step back from becoming a school teacher to explore life. This exploration took shape in many forms and in many aspects of my life. In my personal life I found a love for traveling and mountain adventures, something I still carry with me today. In my professional life I became a yoga teacher, admin assistant, business manager and owner, program coordinator, and massage therapist. Throughout these experiences I was fortunate to live in many places, such as Vancouver Island, the South Shuswap, and Northern NSW in Australia. This journey brought me to where I am today because I realized at the heart of all these experiences was that I have a passion for nurturing people, supporting diversity, and using my light to lift people up so they can believe in themselves and see what they are capable of.
I will forever be grateful for the journey that has led me here. If I had not moved to Whistler and instead started my B.Ed. after my undergrad, I would have missed out on the opportunity to grow in so many ways and become the person I am. I feel confident now in becoming a teaching and knowing that it is the right path for me.
I look forward to the connection that I will build with all my future students. I am excited to learn who they are as individuals and then adapt my teaching to each student’s needs. My hope is that I can create a safe classroom where all of my students will feel welcome and free to be themselves. I believe that watching these students grow and learn will become a great joy in my life, and I hope that I can bring them joy as well.
